According to Wall Street analysts, Pennsylvania will most likely surpass Atlantic City as the second-largest casino market in the country. The state’s industry in has been rapidly expanding by double-digit margins.

“Pennsylvania gaming, sometime next year, will most likely be bigger than Atlantic City,” said Andrew Zarnett, managing director at Deutsche Bank. Others believe that Atlantic City’s ‘Revel’ will boost the industry there with its opening.

“I think Atlantic City will fight back a little bit with the opening of Revel,” said Christopher Jones of Telsey Advisory Group.

The renovation costs $45 million. The region has been benefitting immensely from the reservation, which is quickly becoming an economic engine.

“What’s going on at the reservation is driving what’s going on in Pendelton,” explained Wesley Grilley, the owner of Grilley Management Services in Pendleton. “There is a hell of a lot of action going on out there.”

The expansion will add 184,000 square feet to the resort, as well as 116 new jobs. According to a tribal spokesperson, Tiah DeGrofft, most of them will be permanent, full time positions.

Wildhorse Resort includes the casino and hotel, an RV park, an 18-hole golf course, and Tamastslikt Cultural Institute.

The state lottery has recently reported that Maryland’s two casinos, the Hollywood Casino Perryville and the new Eastern Shore casino, brought in $10.8 million just last month.

The Hollywood Casino opened late last September, and has increased its revenue since December from $140.58 daily per machine to $165.96, collecting a total of $7.7 million last month. The Casino at Ocean Downs opened on January 4th, and has generated $3 million. It currently averages at $144.54 daily per machine.

Together, the two casinos have made more than $38.3 million since their openings. A new casino is expected to open next month in Wayland Township, Michigan. The Gun Lake Casino is almost finished, with full carpeting, 1,400 slots and 28 table games already set up.

So far, the casino leaders have hired six hundred workers, and plan on employing at least one hundred more once they are trained as dealers.

David Frankhouser, Vice President of Operations, said “the hiring process has been unbelievable. We’ve had over 8,000 applications. We’ve done over 3,000 interviews, so it’s been a tremendous process of getting people on board. And the local community has just beem so excited in the effort. It’s just been so exciting!”

They issue a “stable” outlook, with a one to two percent growth in projecting revenues, and a two to four percent increase in casino operator profits. They explain that although the recovery of the gaming industry will be uneven, newer casino locations such as Pennsylvania will undoubtedly boost the industry. Also, Strip gaming revenue was nearly $494.8 million, up from $426.3 million for the same period last year.

Earlier this week, a new casino was opened in the rural community of Bok Homa, near Sandersville. Las Vegas entertainer Wayne Newton was invited to participate in the grand opening by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. He also joined the tribe for the opening of another casino in 1993; the Silver Star Casino.

The Choctaw’s miko, or chief, Beasley Denson, was thrilled by the event, and stated that Monday was a good day for the tribe, Jones County and the entire state of Mississippi. “Bok Homa Casino represents hope for the future,” he explained. “It’s not every day that 300 new jobs come.”

PricewaterhouseCoopers, the assessment and consulting firm, recently released a report which stated that Nevada’s gaming industry should fully recover by 2014. “As the global economy recovers, and international visitors return alongside domestic visitors, Nevada continues to be better placed to capitalize on the upturn than Atlantic City, since Nevada is less affected by competition from regional casino,” said Mary Lynn Palenik, director of gaming, media, communications and entertainment at PwC.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said the 270,000 tourists spent around $150 million through Sunday, and that figure excludes casino revenues.

AAA predicted the 3 million people who flocked to the Mountain West region, which includes Nevada and Utah over the holiday. This shows an increase of 10.7% compared to last year.

In September, gambling revenue on the Strip rose by 2.8%; last year revenue was at $506.4 million, and this year it climbed to $520.6 million. The Nevada Gaming Control Board said casino income increased 4.3% in the first nine months of the year.

Steve Wynn, the CEO of Wynn Resorts explained last week that “We’ve seen the bottom in Las Vegas. I don’t know how fast it’s going to get better, but I don’t think it’s going to get any worse.” This was indeed apparent in quarterly results which were posted by Wynn Resort, Las Vegas Sands Corp and MGM Resorts International, three of the top gambling groups in Las Vegas.
